AVP Cares and the John Wayne Foundation to Educate Fans about Skin Cancer at All Seven AVP Tour Stops
Newport Beach, CA (June 27, 2013) – AVP Cares, the non-profit arm of the AVP, announces a partnership with the John Wayne Cancer Foundation that will bring skin cancer education programs to all seven 2013 AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour Stops. To signify the partnership AVP Cares has committed 100% of the proceeds from ticketing donations to the John Wayne Foundation at the end of the 2013 AVP Tour.
Beginning with the first AVP Tour stop on August 16th in Salt Lake City, UT, the John Wayne Cancer Foundation will have a booth set up at each event to hand out educational materials and its own private label sunscreen samples. In addition to donating the ticketing proceeds back to John Wayne Cancer Foundation at the end of the tournament season, the AVP plans to add a Donate Now button to their website in order to encourage further donations.
“Our goal for the partnership with John Wayne Cancer Foundation is to educate the public about the importance of sun protection”, says Donald Sun, Managing Partner of the AVP. “With our events being outdoors, extended sun exposure is a major concern for fans and athletes alike. We are very pleased to be partnering with John Wayne Cancer Foundation and help take down skin cancer, one tournament at a time.”
AVP Cares is a newly incorporated non-profit organization that supports efforts that aid in making a day at the beach safe and enjoyable for beach goers of all types. The goal of the program is to educate beach goers by working with partner organizations that are passionate about spreading the word on how to protect oneself and ones’ coastal surroundings.
“It's really exciting that the John Wayne Cancer Foundation has joined forces with the AVP, it's a perfect fit”, says Jake Gibb, AVP athlete and two – time beach volleyball Olympian. “I had melanoma myself and was lucky that I found it in time. The AVP is a great voice to help spread this message and ensure beach goers are being smart in the sun.”
“The John Wayne Cancer Foundation is thrilled to be partnering for a cause with the AVP with our sunscreen and skin cancer education program,” expressed Ethan Wayne, son of John Wayne and President of John Wayne Enterprises. “With skin cancer being the most common cancer, our sunscreen/skin cancer awareness program is a natural tie-in with volleyball players and beach goers of all ages. Our goal is to educate young and old on the effects of sun and importance of wearing sunscreen while outdoors. The program has educated over 50,000 youth over the last two years and continues to grow strong. We hope that the pro volleyball players will get involved in protecting their skin as a good example to others on how to fight cancer.”
The Foundation also supplies its own private label sunscreen - a chemical free, natural zinc/mineral formula sunscreen which is child and baby safe, ocean and reef friendly, 22.5% zinc oxide, hypoallergenic, non-nano, PABA-Free, face and body moisturizing, gluten free, vegan, and biodegradable.
This partnership highlights the importance that the AVP places on giving back to communities all around the country. The program will run through 2013 with plans to extend to a longer term agreement. For more information on the partnership, please go to avp.com.
