Updates from around the world this weekend

It was an exciting weekend in the volleyball world.

 

In Long Beach, CA, the USA Men’s indoor national team competed against Russia for FIVB World League. Friday night, USA beat Russia in a close 5-set match, 25-17, 27-25, 20-25, 25-27, 15-12. They came back the next night in front of 5,000 fans and won the match in 3 sets, 25-19, 25-23, 25-17. World league will continue this coming weekend in Chicago when USA takes on Serbia at UIC Pavillion.

 

Another world league match made history this weekend when Italy took down Poland in Rome, Italy, 3-1. The match was played in the historic setting of the Foro Italico, which was a unique opportunity for teams to play outdoors for the first time in volleyball’s history. Foro Italico hosted the first outdoor edition of the European Championship in 1948.

 

In Huixquilucan, Mexico, Tealle Hunkus and Kim Dicello won the bronze medal at the NORCECA event. Hunkus and Dicello. Todd Rogers and Theo Brunner lost a tough match falling just short of the bronze medal.

 

U.S. beach teams left this weekend for another FIVB Grand Slam event in Moscow, Russia. The women’s teams competing in this event are April Ross / Kerri Walsh, Jennifer Fopma / Whitney Pavlik, Emily Day / Summer Ross, Lauren Fendrick / Brooke Sweat, and Brittany Hochevar / Lane Carico. The men’s teams playing are Tri Bourne / John Hyden, Casey Patterson / Jake Gibb, Phil Dalhausser / Sean Rosenthal, and Ryan Doherty / Nick Lucena.
