Friday saw Round 1 of the Winner’s Bracket begin here in St. Petersburg. Here’s an update of what’s been going on in both the men’s and women’s sides:

Men’s

The number one seeded Gibb/Patterson team took down Camacho/Radde, a qualifying team.

Jake Gibb / Casey Patterson (1) def. Dana Camacho / Kyle Radde (16, Q26) 21-12, 21-19

 

Belov/Carambula managed to knock off Brazao/Grotowski in a tough three set match.

Andrei Belov / Adrian Carambula (8) def. Pedro Brazao / Steve Grotowski (9) 21-19, 21-23, 20-18

 

Dalhausser/Rosenthal looked great in their victory over Baxter/Marchewka

Phil Dalhausser / Sean Rosenthal (5) def. Paul Baxter / Russ Marchewka (12) 21-12, 21-11

 

Drost/Tramblie pulled off the biggest upset on the men’s side, knocking off 4th seed Brunner/Rogers in a three set battle.

Avery Drost / Ty Tramblie (13, Q1) def. Theo Brunner / Todd Rogers (4) 21-23, 21-17, 15-12

 

Doherty/Lucena took care of business against the qualifying team of Crabb/VanderWerp.

Ryan Doherty / Nick Lucena (3) def. Trevor Crabb / Steven VanderWerp (14, Q3) 21-14, 21-17 

 

Kennan/Mayer took down Casebeer/Jennings in two sets to advance.

Brad Keenan / John Mayer (6) def. Jeremy Casebeer / Casey Jennings (11) 21-19, 21-16

 

Bourne/Hyden managed to beat a crowd favorite team of Bates/Burik.

Tri Bourne / John Hyden (2) def. Hudson Bates / Mark Burik (15, Q5) 21-13, 21-14

 

Allen/Halverson ended the day by taking down Prosser/Roberts in a hard-fought three set clash.

Billy Allen / Braidy Halverson (7) def. Matt Prosser / Adam Roberts (10) 21-19, 19-21, 15-13

 

Women’s

#1 Seeded Day/Ross had their hands full with the qualifiers Davis/Schumacher, but still managed to pull out the victory.

Emily Day / Summer Ross (1) def. Aurora Davis / Kelly Schumacher (16, Q9) 21-19, 21-19

 

Ferreira/Nielsen took down Day/Perez in another difficult 8-9 matchup.

Raquel Ferreira / Kaitlin Nielsen (8) def. Sarah Day / Olaya Perez (9) 21-17, 21-19

 

Carico/Hochevar looked great in their victory over Iafigliola/Morin

Lane Carico / Brittany Hochevar (5) def. Michelle Iafigliola / Traci Morin (12) 21-9, 21-13

 

Fendrick/Sweat advanced to the next round, managing to knock off the qualifying team of Hinga/Urango.

Lauren Fendrick / Brooke Sweat (4) def. Briana Hinga / Geena Urango (13, Q3) 21-17, 21-11

 

The first major upset of the tournament saw the qualifying team of Bensend/Stockman take down the #3 seeded Fopma/Pavlik in three sets.

Angela Bensend / Emily Stockman (14, Q5) def. Jennifer Fopma / Whitney Pavlik (3) 21-17, 15-21, 17-15

 

DiCello/Hunkus took care of business and defeated the #11 seed Peterson/White.

Kim DiCello / Tealle Hunkus (6) def. Andrea Peterson / Tanya White (11) 21-19, 21-18

 

Piening/Shaw won a closely contested match against Mereszczak/Wallin.

Kathryn Piening / Sheila Shaw (7) def. Laryssa Mereszczak / Megan Wallin (10) 22-20, 21-19

 

Ross/Walsh Jennings looked downright dominant in their victory over the qualifying team of Fuller/Redden.
