Tournament officials announced Monday registration is open for a qualifying tournament to be held in advance of the AVP Cincinnati Open.
The Monterey Beach Open has an impressive turnout for its first year, with more than 200 volleyball players competing this weekend at Del Monte Beach.

Gavira and Herrera downed Latvia’s Smedins/Samoilovs in straight sets (21-19, 21-17) to round out the European Championship and claim the second European title for their country in the 20-year long history of the competition.

The event is high on talent and competition, and low on adult beverages in red cups.
The latest version of the event, part of the International Surf Festival that runs through Sunday, was moved to mid-week last year for the first time after some years that got out of hand.
