Todd Rogers fondly recalls playing in amateur tournaments at Pismo Beach and the people he met there as a teen.
That was well before the Santa Barbara native and Solvang resident went on to become a pro beach volleyball star and Olympic gold medalist.
Now 40 and still playing as a pro, Rogers has begun to accompany his kids on the drive north for their own matches, and he found that some things never change in the tight-knit Central Coast beach volleyball community.

Redondo won the first Boys' Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League championship on Saturday, defeating Dana Hills in the final. Redondo finished unbeaten.
The team was led by seniors Louis Richard, Devon Burki, Eric Beranek, Vince Pizzuti and Tyler Bird, plus junior Tanner Smith and freshman Logan Glave.
The USA-B team of Theo Brunner and Nick Lucena fought off a challenge from compatriots Tri Bourne and John Hyden of USA-A on Sunday to win the men’s title, 21-19, 17-21, 15-13 at the NORCECA Beach Circuit event at the U.S Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.
In the bronze medal match, Puerto Rico’s Hector Soto and Roberto Rodriguez defeated the Canada-B pair of Michael Plantiga and Cameron Wheelan, 21-19, 17-21, 15-12.
