Jen's Blog: First Day of Competition

Jen Fopma - AVP Beach Volleyball Blog

Unfortunately for us, we ended up getting second place in our match yesterday, which means we won't be advancing further in Corrientes.

Brooke took a flight home, so you are all stuck with me the next couple of days while I train with my coach, scout other teams for our next international tournament and obviously update all of you on how much fun I'm having here in Argentina!

The great news is your other American teams are doing a great job of representing! It looks like we will have six teams advancing into playoffs. (Bravo USA!) Despite freezing temperatures (that might be a slight exaggeration, but trust me, its cold!) and me wearing almost every piece of clothing I brought to stay warm, Corrientes is pretty cool (pun intended!)

Jen and Brooke's Blog: Day One in Argentina, Our First Impressions

Jen and Brooke's Blog - AVP Beach Volleyball NewsBy: Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat

When you think of South America you think hot and sunny, right? Yeah, so did we!

First realization in Argentina: It is really cold, overcast and rainy here! Lesson learned. Next time we’ll research the weather. (Good thing we are classic over-packers).

Second realization: Everyone here loves a good "siesta.” Like, everyone! Businesses shut down, restaurants lock their doors until 8 p.m. and the city is a ghost town! (Except for all the international beach volleyball players walking the streets trying to find food). It was a tough adjustment for us, but that's why we brought Starburst and M&M's, right?

The great news is we made it safely to Corrientes, thanks mostly to our new best travel buddy, Nick Lucena, who just happens to be fluent in Spanish!

Jen and Brooke's Blog: Getting Ready For Corrientes

Jen and Brooke - AVP Beach Volleyball BlogBy: Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat

Our first ever blog post! (yay) We are hoping you are all stoked to read about our travel to Argentina for the FIVB World Tour Grand Slam Corrientes.

"We" are Brooke Sweat (originally from Ft Meyers, Fla.) and Jennifer Fopma (Long Beach, Calif.). We both now live in Orange County, Calif. so we can train daily with our coach, Jeff Conover, you may know him as the coach for the 2012 London Olympic Silver Medalists April Ross and Jen Kessy!

Since Corrientes is a new stop on the FIVB World Tour, we were unable to get our usual advice on what to pack from veteran players (China-bring all your own food, Switzerland-bring lots of rain gear). So we are packing blind, which means both of our checked bags will be over 50lbs & our first 30 minutes at the airport will be spent rearranging everything to fit the limit (This actually happens almost every time we travel).
