The New Zealand Volleyball Tour and NCAA men's season are heating up.

NCAA Women

As reported Friday afternoon, sand volleyball emerged victorious at the NCAA Convention in Atlanta. However, due to extensive time spent debating the override during the past nine months, competition is not expected to begin until the 2011-2012 academic year, according to Kathy DeBoer, executive director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

"I'm very proud of those that supported this sport and the new opportunities it will create for women and girls," DeBoer said. "We have much work to do. There is obviously much concern in Division I about sand volleyball. We have a year to...address these concerns."

New Zealand

It only took one tournament for Germany's duo of Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig to claim a title on the New Zealand Beach Volleyball Tour. They defeated New Zealand’s top-ranked team of Anna Scarlett and Susan Blundell to win the third event of the tour in Mount Maunganui on Sunday, 21-16, 21-18.

Goller/Ludwig faced their toughest challenge of the tournament in the semifinals against Beijing silver medalists Tian Jia and Wang Fei of China. Next week’s finale in Auckland will include a third top-10 team in Angie Akers and Tyra Turner, producing the most difficult field to date.

In the men’s side of the draw, Chinese pair Liu Wei & Jiang Zhi Feng edged out young locals Ben O’Dea and Michael Watson 21-15, 19-21, 15-12 in the final.

O’Dea/Watson upset top-seeded Brendon Heath and Ben’s brother Edwin O’Dea 21-14, 21-14 in the semifinals, handing them their first loss on the 2010 tour.

Argentina

Playa Grande hosted the first stop of the Argentine National Beach Volleyball Circuit over the weekend in preparation for the 2010 South American Beach Volleyball Tour, which commences at the end of the month in Brazil. Martín Conde and Facundo Del Coto defeated Santiago Etchegaray and Pablo Suárez 21-16, 21-17 in the finals to claim the championship.
