April Ross captured her fourth title of the year with Jen Kessy in an upset over top-seeded Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh.
2009 World Champions and second seeds Jennifer Kessy / April Ross upset top seeds Nicole Branagh / Elaine Youngs and took home their fourth AVP Crocs Tour title of 2009 Sunday at the AVP Crocs Tour Tournament of Champions in Mason, Ohio. On the men’s side, the upset trend continued as second-seeded John Hyden / Sean Scott defeated top seeds and 2008 Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser / Todd Rogers for the second week in a row and took home their fourth title of 2009.
Kessy / Ross defeated Branagh / Youngs 22-20, 21-18. Sunday’s final marked the ninth time the two teams have met in AVP finals in 2009, with Branagh / Youngs leading the season series 5-4.
“It gets tougher every week to strategize,” Ross said. “Today we went after Nicole instead of EY, which we hadn’t done in a while, and it worked out.”
Kessy / Ross eliminated fourth-seeded Priscilla Lima / Tatiana Minello 21-17, 21-16 to advance to Sunday’s final, while Branagh / Youngs defeated ninth-seeded Brooke Hanson / Lisa Rutledge 21-17, 21-19.
In the men’s final, Hyden / Scott defeated Rogers / Dalhausser for the fourth time in AVP finals this season and the second time in two weeks, as they claimed the Chicago title August 30.
“We served really well. You have to serve well, side out well, dig some balls, do everything well to beat Phil and Todd,” Hyden, who won his first career title in Mason, said of the win. “Also, Sean had a huge block at the end.”
Hyden / Scott clinched the title in the second game after two game point attempts by Dalhausser / Rogers. A 4-0 Hyden / Scott scoring run rendered the final score 21-16, 22-20. Sunday’s final marked the seventh time the two teams have met in the championship match, with Hyden / Scott now leading the finals series 4-3.
Hyden / Scott made the finals by defeating fifth-seeded Matt Olson / Kevin Wong 21-18, 18-21, 15-11, while Dalhausser / Rogers advanced with a 21-18, 21-19 win over surging tenth-seeds Will Strickland / Aaron Wachtfogel.
