2009 World Champion Jen Kessy claimed her second consecutive Best of the Beach individual title Saturday night, while 2008 Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser claimed his first solo title at the AVP Crocs Tour Best of the Beach presented by Vegas.com. Their opponents, Dianne DeNecochea and Jeff Nygaard, placed second.
Athletes participating in the final were unable to select their regular-season partners for Saturday night’s final. Kessy selected Tyra Turner after DeNecochea chose 2008 Olympian Elaine Youngs to join her in the battle for the only individual title on the AVP Crocs Tour. Kessy / Turner swept DeNecochea / Youngs 21-14, 25-23.
“It’s been an unbelievable year,” said Kessy, who won four regular-season AVP titles and the World Championship with regular-season partner April Ross. “All my dreams are coming true. I came out and worked as hard as I could and it’s happening for me.”
Kessy and Turner combined for eight blocks, while DeNecochea and Youngs failed to register one. With Saturday’s win, Kessy became the first woman to win multiple Best of the Beach titles under the current format.
In the men’s final Dalhausser selected two-time Best of the Beach champion John Hyden as his partner before Nygaard chose Dalhausser’s regular-season partner and fellow 2008 Olympic gold medalist Todd Rogers. Dalhausser / Hyden dominated Nygaard / Rogers in two games: 21-15, 21-10.
“I chose Hyden because he’s playing the best volleyball of his career,” Dalhausser said. “He’s a right side defender, so it worked out perfectly.”
Dalhausser had nine kills and no errors in Saturday’s final. For complete Best of the Beach results, click here.
