Temperatures topped 100 degrees as Brazilians Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca and Americans Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers claimed gold medals, while two-time Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh and Brazilians Alison Cerruti/Harley Marques took silver at the first-ever AVP World Challenge: USA vs. Brazil presented by Sanderson Ford. The United States won the overall Country Challenge 26-22.
Juliana/Larissa defeated May-Treanor/Walsh 21-11, 21-16 in Sunday’s gold medal match after losing to them in Saturday night’s final round of pool play.
“You have to pay attention all the time, and yesterday we were lazy,” Juliana said. “It’s hot, there’s a crowd of people, I wasn’t prepared, and today, we were prepared.”
May-Treanor and Walsh had not partnered for a professional tournament, domestic or international, since winning the AVP Manhattan Beach Open on September 20, 2008. The AVP World Challenge was May-Treanor’s first tournament of the 2009 season.
“For the first tournament back, not being 100 percent, we had a good tournament,” May-Treanor said. “We played better in the evening, it’s hard in the heat, and we served better last night. We’ll work on getting better.”
“Misty can still hold her own and I’m really proud of her,” Walsh said. “We made some execution errors today, and Juliana and Larissa are the best team in the world right now.”
On the men’s side, Dalhausser/Rogers dominated Alison/Harley 21-14, 21-15 to claim the men’s gold and solidify the Country Challenge victory for the United States. Dalhausser had seven aces and eight blocks.
“I was fired up, probably more fired up than I’ve ever been, with all of Team USA behind me,” Dalhausser said. “I just wanted to go out there and leave it out on the court.”
2009 FIVB World Champions Jen Kessy/April Ross claimed bronze with a 21-18, 21-15 win over Maria Antonelli/Talita Antunes, while Emanuel Rego/Ricardo Santos took home third-place honors with a 21-18, 21-13 win over Brad Keenan/Nick Lucena on the men’s side.
