Shaq talks with Coach Phil Dalhausser before taking on Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh.

Santa Monica beachgoers beware. Pending the outcome of Shaq’s match against Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, he could soon be seen on national TV running along the beach in a pink Speedo.

While most of the Hermosa Beach audience before the match cheered heavily for May-Treanor and Walsh, many might want to avoid a spectacle that includes seeing a 7’1” basketball player in his outfit of shame.

Shaq starred in the shooting Sunday, Aug. 9 of an episode for his reality show “Shaq Vs.,” in which he challenges elite athletes in their sports to a duel. The episode in which he takes on the beach volleyball golden girls will air Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 9 p.m./8 p.m. Central on ABC. Click here for a preview!

Shaq must have had full confidence in himself and his teammate, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Todd Rogers. Otherwise, he probably wouldn’t have challenged the best women’s team in beach volleyball and then proposed his own pink-hued punishment.

Prior to facing The Diesel, May-Treanor and Walsh realized their foe was almost a foot taller than Walsh (6’3”). “Because of his size, our strategy is to hit high and hit hard.… We’re gonna make him dive in the sand,” said May.

Phil Dalhausser, Rogers’ AVP Tour partner, picked up the coaching responsibilities. Before the match started, he said that his advice to Shaq was, “when you’re blocking, make sure you reach over the net.”

Because the match was shot for TV and is yet to air, not much can be revealed. What can be said, however, is that Shaq put on a show and May-Treanor and Walsh stuck to their strategy. As time went on Shaq got better at reaching over the net on blocks—even if a lot of the time he was tangled in the net.

Remember, to see who ended up winning the challenge, tune in to “Shaq Vs.” on ABC Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 9/8 Central.

“Shaq Vs.” wasn’t the only special event on Sunday at Stadium Court. Before the challenge went down, a moving memorial took place for the late Mike Whitmarsh. Whitmarsh, who passed away on Feb. 17, is remembered as one of the all-time best beach volleyball players. Friends Casey Jennings and Mike Dodd and family including Whitmarsh’s wife, daughters and brother said a few words about the volleyball legend.

Jennings told the audience about how he used to playfully embarrass “Whitty” by screaming out his name when he saw Whitmarsh sitting in the stands during his matches. Dodd, who won a silver medal with Whitmarsh in the 1996 Olympics, talked about how much he loved and respected his friend. Most touching, however, was what Whitmarsh’s two young daughters had to say: “My daddy was the best daddy in the whole wide world,” said 5-year-old Kendall.

The tribute was finished off in a way only Geeter can do it: listing off all of Whitmarsh’s volleyball accomplishments, Geeter gave him one final introduction—this one to the beach volleyball court in heaven.

Between the men’s final and Shaq showdown, USC and UCLA played a friendly 6-on-6 alumni match for bragging rights. Playing for USC were Tracy Lindquist, Keao Burdine, April Ross, Jennifer Kessy, Donald Suxho, Brooke Billings, Steve Obradovich, and Tim Hovland. Representing the Bruins were Sinjin Smith, Kevin Wong, Chrissie Zartman, Lauren Fendrick, Albert Hannemann, Jim Menges, and Julie Romias.

UCLA ended up winning but the seesaw challenge. At the halftime break, UCLA led, 13-9. When the game resumed, the Trojans went on a 9-1 run and brought the score to 18-14. From there, the score went back and forth until the end when the Bruins took it, 25-22.
