Newly-minted FIVB World Champions and No. 2 AVP seeds Jen Kessy and April Ross took home the women’s title at the AVP Crocs Tour San Francisco Open presented by Barefoot Wine, while No. 1 seeds and 2008 gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers came out on top of the men’s bracket.
Kessy and Ross upset top seeds Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs 16-21, 21-19, 15-12 to win their third title of the 2009 season. After serving for the championship in Hermosa Beach and letting it get away, Kessy and Ross knew they had to step up their game.
“They’re the hardest team we play,” Ross said. “So we really worked on our serving and our defense.”
Branagh and Youngs still edge Kessy and Ross 6-3 in finals wins this season when facing one another.
Dalhausser and Rogers handily defeated second-seeded John Hyden and Sean Scott 21-17, 21-16 to take home their first San Francisco title as a team. Their win Sunday marked their sixth of the 2009 season.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh and partner Rachel Wacholder finished tied for third in their second tournament back from taking much of the season off to start families. They were defeated in the semifinals by Branagh and Youngs 16-21, 21-19, 15-7.
“We’re way better than we were last week,” Walsh said. “We made the Final Four, which is good, but not good enough.”
Earlier in the day, the third-seeded Walsh and Wacholder defeated 11th-seeded Ashley Ivy and Lauren Fendrick 21-11, 21-12.
The AVP Crocs Tour San Francisco Open presented by Barefoot Wine marked the third year in a row the professional beach volleyball Tour has stopped in the City by the Bay. The tournament will be broadcast nationally on VERSUS Saturday, August 22 at 3 p.m. EDT.
