This marks the fourth consecutive Hermosa Beach open for Todd and Phil.
Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers won their unprecedented fourth consecutive AVP Crocs Slam Bud Light Hermosa Beach Open presented by Virgin America Sunday.
Top-seeded Dalhausser and Rogers beat second-seeded John Hyden and Sean Scott, 18-21, 21-15, 15-9, in the final.
Down 7-6 in the third and deciding game, Dalhausser and Rogers went on a 5-0 run to get ahead for good.
Although they’ve now won five of the season’s 10 events, it’s been a relatively mediocre season for the duo, who won 11 of 15 AVP events and an Olympic gold medal last year. They hadn’t won on the AVP Crocs Tour since May.
“What feels even better (than winning four straight) is getting back on the podium,” Dalhausser said.
Dalhausser and Rogers beat sixth-seeded Brad Keenan and Nick Lucena to make the final, while Hyden and Scott beat third-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal in the semifinals.
See below for more flash quotes on their win and Rogers playing with Shaquille O’Neal against two-time gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Sunday for a taping of “Shaq Vs.”:
Phil Dalhausser
On the marathon rally in game three that put them ahead 8-7: “If that rally drops their way, it’s a totally different match.”
“What feels even better (than winning four straight) is getting back on the podium.”
On Rogers playing with Shaq against two-time gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh for his show, “Shaq Vs.” If Shaq and Todd lose, Shaq’s pledged to run down the beach in a pink Speedo: “Apparently, I’m the coach. It should be interesting. If Kerri and Misty move Shaq around on the serve, it’s going to be a tough one.”
What are the chances Shaq will be running in that Speedo? “I would say 99.9 percent.”
Todd Rogers
“I enjoy playing here. The sand here is some of the deepest sand in the world, which really helps my defense a lot. Guys just can’t get those angles like they normally can.”
On what turned their season around with two international wins in the past three weeks: “I have no idea. We played one of the best, if not the best we’ve ever played in Marseille, the entire tournament. He was on with the serve, block was great, setting was great, my passing was great, siding out was great, defense was great. It just felt like every facet of the game we were just clicking on. And we took that into Austria. Then we took it on over to here.”
On Shaq: “He’s such a big, big guy. As Phil said, ‘Did you see how deep he was sinking in the sand?’ He’s just a big, big guy, and I’ve never seen a guy that big move very well in sand.”
“I told Misty and Kerri, ‘If you guys are close, run away. Let him kill the ball or whatever, because he will break you.’ Same with me.”
On possibly trading big men, Shaq for Phil: “No, not any time soon. Shaq’s a good guy, but Phil’s a little more skilled on the volleyball court.”
