Dodd, Minello pull upset in Mason

Fifth seeds on women's side ousted in Ohio

Carrie Dodd and partner Tatiana Minello move on as they upset the fifth seeded team in the tournament.

Mason, OH -- The AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Mason continued competition Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

In Saturday's men's action, sixth seeds John Hyden and Brad Keenan upset third seeds Nick Lucena and Sean Scott, moving on to face second seeds Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal. Gibb and Rosenthal secured their spot in Sunday's semi-finals, defeating Hyden/Keenan in and exciting three-game match, ending 21-18, 17-21 and clinching the victory with a 15-12 win. Hyden and Keenan will match up against eighth seeds Casey Jennings and Matt Fuerbringer on Sunday morning for a spot in the semi-finals.

On the women's side, the contenders' bracket was whittled down Saturday morning. Eighth seeds Carrie Dodd and Tatiana Minello unseeded fifth seeds Rachel Wacholder and Tyra Turner in three, 21-15, 19-21 and 15-12. The sixth and seventh seeds battled it out in the final women's match of the day session as Angie Akers and three-time Olympian Holly McPeak topped Diane DeNecochea and Barbara Fontana 21-14, 21-19. Dodd/Minello and Akers/McPeak all move on Sunday needing to win one more match to earn their way out of the contender's bracket and into the semi finals.

AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Mason will continue play with three quarter final matches on Saturday night featuring Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs taking on the tournament's second seeds Jen Boss and April Ross, men's Olympic champions Phil Dalahusser and Todd Rogers going head to head with12th seeds John Mayer and Jeff Nygaard and capping off the nigh is two-time Olympic Gold Medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh facing off with fourth seeds, Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan.

Before the action starts, the city of Mason and the AVP Crocs Tour will salute the accomplishments of team USA's Beach Volleyball athletes including the Beach Volleyball's golden girls May-Treanor/Walsh, men's reigning world and Olympic champions Dalhausser/Rogers and the duos of Branagh/Elaine and Gibb/Rosenthal. City of Mason Mayor Tom Grossmann will be on hand to congratulate and make a presentation to the Olympians on behalf of the city. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., fans are encouraged to come early, as the first 3,000 fans through the gate will receive American flags.
