AVP players return to experience local favorites
Finding the best San Diego has to offer
University of San Diego alumni, Katie Lindquist, returns to familiar territory this weekend.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - One of the biggest challenges on every tour stop is not necessarily with what is taking place on the sand, but what to do once play for the day is complete.
To help alleviate some of the confusion about some of the best that San Diego has to offer, the San Diego standouts on the tour shared some their secrets of places not to miss while in town this weekend.
Hans Stolfus (Attended and played at San Diego State)
Dining: "You've got to go to the Beach Comber if you are going to have a cocktail. It's a local beach volleyball hang out. For Italian there's Buon Appetito in Little Italy. In downtown I like Candelas. The best milkshake is at Beef and Bun on Fletcher Parkway. For a Hawaiian Plate Lunch it's Kealani's."
Shopping and other activities: "My girl likes to go shopping in Fashion Valley and La Jolla. Otherwise the beaches are great. The environments around each beach are great where they feel like they are separate communities, but are combined. San Diego feels like a bigger Santa Barbara without feeling like LA. It's a great town."
Katie Lindquist (attended the University of San Diego)
Non-beach activity location: "We like to go to the outlet malls in San Ysidro. Every time we come to San Diego we make sure to take some time to get to one of the outlet malls here. We also like shopping at Mission Valley Mall."
Dining: "Seau's, Coteja's that is right down from my school and then anywhere is Pacific Beach is good. There are so many different things, areas and fun things to do, so it's hard to pick one."
Diane DeNecochea (resident)
Non-beach activity location: "I work out at The Sporting Club in La Jolla and I love it. It is my second home."
Dining: "We love the Chinese places like Jasmine in Kearny Mesa or New York Giant Pizza on Marina Blvd. We also like to go to the Gas Lamp district to eat."
Shopping: "I love Fashion Valley and University Towne Center malls."
Matt Olson (resident)
Non-beach activity location: "I enjoy surfing in San Diego. I grew up in Cardiff, which has some legendary point breaks right there for long boarding. I'm a short board kind of guy and still surf today. I will go out two or three times a week just to get away from everything."
Dining: "I know every sushi place in Encinitas and Mr. Sushi has an all you can eat sushi bar. It's a local place and kind of crowded. A new one by my place called Tip Top Meats in Carlsbad is a good spot that a lot of people don't know about. All of these places are in North County. D Street Bar and Grill and Saloon are also great places."
John Hyden (Attended and played at San Diego State)
Dining: "Gabbiano's sandwiches are the best. The best places to get Mexican food are at the dive places like Alberto's and Roberto's."
Beach location: "The best thing to do is hit the beach. There are beautiful beaches up and down the coast here."
Erin Byrd (resident)
Dining: "My favorite Mexican place is Casa Guadalajara in Old Town. It is amazing authentic Mexican food. They dress in costume and it is beautifully decorated. I recommend that everyone go there."
Non-beach activity location: "I highly recommend South Mission Beach where everyone trains. The courts there were generously donated by Bill Walton. There's also the San Diego Zoo which is so gorgeous."
Shopping: "Garnet Street in Pacific Beach is really nice. There are a bunch of local shops there and good prices on cute stuff."
